Dental Hygienist
Milton Keynes
Expert Dental Hygienist in Milton Keynes
Effective dental hygiene is vital in order to help keep your teeth and gums in optimum condition, your smile whiter and your breath fresh.
Our in-house dental hygienists offer professional cleaning treatments using specialised equipment and materials. An important aspect of the hygienist’s role is to show you how to look after your teeth so they remain free from plaque.
Stains from coffee, tea or cigarettes can be removed and you will also be given guidance on the correct brushing, flossing and interdental brushing techniques to use at home.
Gum Disease Prevention
Dental hygiene at our dental practice also forms part of treating gum disease and bad breath.
If you have a bridge, denture, orthodontic treatment or a dental implant you will have specific hygiene needs that the hygienist will be able to assist you with.
Gum disease becomes more likely as we age and can be detected and treated by our hygienist, so we encourage regular appointments.
Direct Access to our Dental Hygienist
With effect from 1 May 2013, dental hygienists and dental therapists are permitted to treat patients without a prior examination by a dentist.
This means that we can now welcome patients requesting to the services of the dental hygienist or dental therapist without having to be examined by a dentist prior to the appointment.
For new patients to the practice who just want to see the dental hygienist, the patient will be required to fill in an up to date medical history and a consent form for treatment.
The hygienist will be able to carry out a scale and polish treatment and also give you any advice regarding your oral hygiene. They will also perform an ‘Basic Periodontal Examination’ (BPE). This allows her to detect plaque, calculus and any inflammation. The gums will also be assessed in terms of pocket depths that can indicate the presence of bone loss around the teeth.
Please note, this is not intended as a replacement for a thorough dental examination with a dentist. If the hygienist believes you need further treatment that she cannot provide she will advise you and refer you to one of our dentists.
